Apple holding a media event September 7, says Bloomberg

Not sure how exactly this slipped our neural net, perhaps it was added in a later update, but yesterday's Bloomberg revelation about a potential Apple TV show rental service now also includes the following tip: Steve Jobs et al plan on hosting an event in San Francisco on September 7. This just so happens to be on a Tuesday and meshes perfectly with Apple's annual Mac plus iPod touch promotion (which ends on the same day). Of course, we could've told you Apple would be holding an early September iPod refresh event this time last year -- the real question is what else might be revealed during the keynote?

Acer Aspire TimelineX 4820T Review: Subtlety defined with style and performance

Ra From Gemstone to Aspire, Acer’s roster of competent yet slender netbooks has unceasingly epitomized elegance, distinctiveness and performance in every possible way. The company’s tradition of labeling its attractive devices with nouns yoking sophistication and selfdom hasn’t recently trumped up. In past, we enthusiastically flashed on Acer’s 5740G which popped up being a successor to the 5738G. Our paling around with Acer’s Timeline series has surely been quite interesting so far. Being ‘on the beam’ about our reactions, we bluntly went ahead and said ‘yes’ when yet another notebook from Acer’s Aspire portfolio hopped onto our desks for getting a comprehensive analysis.
Hauling the sheer 14-inch Acer Timeline X4820T from its box, one thing literally pierced through our mind, this could be more than a customary sleek and light laptop. All ‘in the saddle’ to be hashed over, the system’s professional look is still very much intact, but Acer seems to have added a bit of flamboyance here and there. There’s now a silver trim around the touchpad and the black brushed aluminum cover for a classic appearance. Even better, the 4820T has very little luster as the palm rest is covered in a silvery metal as well. Regrettably, the screen bezel and trim around the keyboard still get the unfortunate black glossy-plastic treatment.
Well, our drilling assessment sallied forth with the design wielding which gave us a chaste look, though not the most voguish one. With manufacturers crowding in with slimmer portable computing solutions, Acer sings pretty harmoniously to similar tunes by tagging it with a weigh of mere 2.2kgs. The lid of the notebook is commendably thin but fails to stand erect when moved from one spot to another. If you are thinking to work on it while traveling, all that crosses our mind is – a bad idea. As we believe, gaining on one thing shouldn’t lose on the other. Having a sturdy hold on its outer flip would have been appreciated since we aren’t interested in playing with keys after losing its panel.
The 4870T’s 0.9- to 1.1-inch thick body is quite a lot placed in proximity to the biggest design coup, nevertheless. It’s just an incredibly thin and light 14-inch laptop, and the battery doesn’t bulge at all like some other ultra portables out there. Despite the thin dimensions, the machine still has room for a DVD player and three USB ports on its right edge. We genuinely have no idea why Acer had to line up all the USB ports so close to each other. It emerged to be quite uneasy to simultaneously plug in multiple devices. An extra USB jack, an HDMI port, an Ethernet RJ-45 port, a VGA port, a Kensington lock slot, air cooling vents, and mic and headphones sockets dwell on the left side, while its 5-in-1 card reader lives on the front lip. There’s also an Acer Crystal Eye webcam and two microphones integrated into the bezel.

The exquisite device’s bass flaunts a battery bay, an HDD bay, a battery release latch, a memory compartment and ventilation slots endured by the cooling fan. The ODD access indicator and DC-in jack are also smoked out on the right edge. While under the laptop’s lid are a number of indicators scattered composedly around the keyboard which include the battery, power, Num Lock, HDD, communication and Caps Lock indicators. A user-programmable key and PowerSmart button for cajoling the device into energy-efficient mode are placed on the top right hand corner above the keyboard.
The high-definition Acer Cine Crystal LED-backlit TFT LCD impressed us with clear visuals, thanks to its 1366 x 768 pixel resolution. We could also easily execute our tasks faster with simultaneous multi-window viewing, a praiseworthy innovation for those who’d like to close and open windows at regular intervals for a flake of fun (just a guess). The image clarity is good enough to keep you grooving over your favorite artists’ videos or favorite comedy flicks for long hours. The screen is definitely bright, like what we’ve seen earlier from Acer, and didn’t disappoint us with any dim horizontal angle viewing.
The device’s standard voltage core i3 processor towers above all of the ULV laptops we have reviewed in the past. The 2.26GHz core i3-350M processor along with 4GB of RAM was certainly fast enough for everyday routine too – we concurrently ran Chrome, Microsoft Word 2007, TweetDeck and Trillian with no lag, and even adding DVD playback to the mix didn’t slow things down.
Coming to the point that half-way makes it or breaks it, the keys lying luxuriously sure enough satisfied our senses. We appreciate the execution of 86 roomy keys posted on the device. Typing in was purely a fluid experience. Just below the space hopped up by keys, the touchpad navigates quite smoothly and is very responsive. Almost like a genie, it listens to your command and works quite impulsively. Quite bouncy and generous in size, it supports multitouch gestures, though we turned off the pinch-to-zoom function since it would mistakenly zoom in on web pages when that’s the last thing we wanted to do. The scroll strip on the right edge was also quick to react. The single mouse button was a bit of uneasy, tempting us to take a knife and chop it into two dedicated buttons.
Since we like everything around us to be more organized, the addition of lots of interesting chunk was pretty cool. Clicking on Start gave us more than just getting on a clove. With its media center, we could personalize the visuals and sound on our computer, making it look even more mesmeric. The option to personalize stood by what it says we could easily toggle between ‘my themes’ ‘aero themes’, and six basic and high contrast themes. Features like transfering of files, share with a home group, change UC settings, back up your files, add new users, and change text size under the category ‘Getting Started’ remain the same.
On clicking ‘start’, documents, pictures, music, games, computer, control penal, devices and printers, and default programs were spotted. One thing that literally made our eyes open wide was the ability to attach sticky notes on your computer. We could remind ourselves with other important tasks by leaving notes on the screen. Though miniature, the experience was truly nice, making us feel more like maintaining a personal to-do notepad.
Playing Farm Frenzy, where catching a bear who tosses animals around, feeding chickens and collecting coins, was pure fun with great graphics and vibrant colors. We also enjoyed playing Dream Day First Home where checking the to-do list and looking for those items hidden in the scene was absolutely pleasant. The entertaining device was strong enough to keep us engaged with 21 pre-installed games. Our aural senses were looked after well with its in-built virtual surround sound left and right speakers supported by Dolby Home Theater. Though decent for personal listening, making others peep into those videos being played wouldn’t have been odd at the same time. Though the TimelineX is gracing the market with discrete ATI Radeon GPU, our unit had Intel’s integrated high-definition graphics, great enough to watch YouTube HD videos.
Embedded with powerful attributes like Acer Nplify 802.11b/g/, Intel Core i3-330M processor and Intel HD graphics, the notebook let us go through it smoothly with a 6-cell Li-ion battery. After nearly six hours of powerful computing, the device looked still afresh with minimal energy torn out. For storing ample amount of content, the HDD options of 320GB and 500GB topple as good add-ons. Not to forget, the DVD Super Multi ODD has also been planked in to add a sense of distinctiveness. Well, just like the Aspire One 521 and 721, the company has loaded this one as well with powerful software. The desktop comes strewed with NetFlix, Acer games, Norton Online Backup Security, McAfee Internet Security Suite 2009 trial, Microsoft Office Personal 2007, Microsoft Office Trail, Adobe Flash Player 10, Acer Video Conference Manager and Windows Live Essentials.
To put it in a nutshell, the Acer Aspire TimelineX X4820T is sure in for those looking for powerful performance in a slim chassis. The fusion of elegance, style and extreme portability takes the notebook certainly up on the ladder. Just certain tweaks in its substandard build quality would’ve made it nail down even more admiration. However, there’s no doubt that it’s in a class much on its own. The sleek unit successfully scores a good 9 out of 10 from us. A price tag of Rs. 36,624 (exclusive taxes) comes stitched to it.

Acer debuts Aspire Ethos 5943G and 8943G Intel Core-powered laptops

Acer unveiled a pair of sleek and shiny laptop computers, the Aspire Ethos 5943G and 8943G, both of which look like some high-end, powerful machines.
According to Notebook Italia, both Aspire Ethos models will come equipped with 220-nit CineCrystal LED screens, ATI Mobility Radeon HD5000 graphics, a Mobile Intel Express HM55 chipset, and up to 4 GB DDR3 memory.
They also both retain a 4,800mAh battery, which is actually a sour point as it only lasts 3.5 hours. However, as long as the battery is charged or you have the laptop plugged in, those fancy displays can be put to a lot of good use, either for gaming or movies, and they are 3D-capable.
There are some specs open to customization on both Acer machines, such as the choice between an Intel Core i5 or i7 processor, and deciding between DVD or Blu-ray optical drives.
Here’s some of what you can look for on each laptop individually:
Aspire Ethos 5943G (pictured)
  • 15.6-inch HD Acer CineCrystal LED screen (1366 x 768 resolution)
  • Windows 7 Ultimate or Home Premium OS
  • Up to 640GB of hard drive space
  • 2.1 internal speaker arrangement with subwoofer
  • 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi
  • Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR

  • Webcam
Aspire Ethos 8943G
  • 18-inch HD Acer CineCrystal LED screen (1920 x 1080 resolution)
  • Windows 7 Home Premium OS
  • Can hold two 640GB hard drives
  • 5.1 internal speaker arrangement with subwoofer
  • 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi
  • Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR
  • Fingerprint reader
  • Multi-card reader (SD/MMC/MMCplus/MC/MS PRO/xD)
  • Webcam
Neither a price nor a release date have been announced yet, but expect to pay more than usual for an Acer notebook with these specs.

Alienware M17x

Overall Rating

Given the extreme performance and category dominance we discovered with Alienware desktop computers, we shouldn’t be very surprised that the Alienware M17x garners such high ratings among gaming laptops. The brand continues its dominance of the gaming category without missing a beat and even the extreme graphics motif that makes it stand out among desktops is carried over to the laptop units.
If there are any two points that we find just a little disconcerting about this laptop, the first has to be its very designation into this category. This unit is both large and heavy. Be really careful when shopping for a bag to carry it around. The typical laptop bag designated for 17-inch computers just won’t do it. If you can find one that claims to accommodate two 17-inch computers, you’ll be in good shape. As for weight, at about thirteen pounds, depending on how it’s configured, it’s not going to be a suitable replacement for a netbook…nor is it intended to be. The other bone of contention is its price. Of course, shoppers considering Alienware are looking for performance rather than a bargain price so that’s no big surprise.

Alienware computers are famous for their radical appearance and this one is no exception. The anodized aluminum case is available in silver, black or red but that’s just the beginning. The screen features edge-to-edge glass on the display that announces immediately that you’re not dealing with any run of the mill machine. Alienware has a system call Fusion FX which allows you to set the colors behind the backlit keys. In fact, as many as four different colors can be selected simultaneously so that different regions of the keyboard display different colors. Certainly not necessary but definitely cool looking. The lighting options extend down the front of the keyboard in a grill-like arrangement that is either reminiscent of a stealth fighter or a 1950s concept car.
Features:
When talking about extreme gaming computers, it’s always the graphics card setup the gets most of the attention. That’s certainly the case with the M17x which comes standard with an awesome NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260M card featuring a substantial 1GB of video memory. If that’s not enough for your extreme gaming requirements, the computer can be ordered with a pair of the NVIDIA cards which will support outrageous gaming requirements or amazing multitasking.
Alienware’s M17x can be built with either Inter Core 2 processors or the newer i5 and i7 CPUs. For Core 2’s, the included processor is a substantial Intel Core 2 Duo P8600 running at 2.4GHz, 3MB Cache and 1066MhzFSB but there are lots of upgrade options. There are two faster Core 2 Duo processors available with the T9600 running at 2.8GHz clock speed and 6MB Cache or the T9800 that kicks the speed up to 2.93GHz with the same Cache. A couple of different Intel Core 2 Quad processors are also options. The first is the Q9800 with the four cores running at 2.0GHz or, for ultimate performance, the Intel Core 2 Quad QX9300 with four 2.53GHZ cores, 12MB Cache and 1066 MHz FSB.
The alternative base processor is the Intel Core i5 520M running at 2.4GHz and 3MB Cache. There’s also the option of an i5 540M running at 2.53GHz. There are four Intel Core i7 options with the basic processor running at 2.66GHz and sporting 4MB Cache. The top of the line is the Intel Core i7 920XM which clocks at 2.0GHZ or up to 3.2GHz in Turbo Mode and has a 8MB Cache.
When you have a need for speed, the next essential piece of the puzzle is RAM memory. The basic unit comes equipped with 4GB of dual channel DDR3 1066MHz RAM. It’s upgradable to 6GB or 8GB with the snappiest option being 8GB Dual Channel DDR3 running at 1333MHz. While the base 4GB is pretty substantial for a typical laptop, for this gaming monster, we can’t help but think a RAM upgrade is a no brainer.
There are several storage options available, too. The starting point is a pretty pedestrian 250GB drive running at 7,200RPM. The 7,200RPM drives can be upgraded to 320 or 500GB or you can choose to sacrifice speed for size by opting for a 640GB drive that spins at 5,400RPM. To really get fast, both 128GB and 256GB solid state drives are also available. They’ll give far faster data access speed than any mechanical hard drive can but have notably smaller storage space available.
Available optical drives include a DVD/CD burner, a drive that will also play Blu-ray discs and a final upgrade to one that includes a Blu-ray burner. The included optical display, i.e. the screen, is a 17-inch WideXGA+ which displays 1440 x 900 pixels (900p). That can be enhanced by adding a 17-inch WideUXGA screen displaying 1920 x 1200 pixel resolution (1200p).
The M17x comes with a one year basic service plan which can be increased to three or four years. There’s also an advanced in home service plan available but it requires remote diagnosis before a technician would be dispatched

MSI's new GX640 budget gaming laptop packs Core i5 CPU, Mobility Radeon HD 5850

In the wake of Maingear’s eX-L gaming laptop getting revamped with new Intel Core processors and the latest ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5870 graphics, MSI announces an even cheaper gaming notebook that is also equipped with some new hardware.
Unlike the Maingear, the MSI GX640 comes in a single configuration, but it’s not a bad one for the $1,099 price tag. You get a Core i5-430M processor, 4GB of DDR3 RAM, 500GB hard drive, DVD burner, and a 1,680×1,050 15.4-inch display. Most importantly, however, is that it includes the new ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5850 graphics, which won’t be as fast as its more powerful 5870 sibling, but still supports DirectX 11 and comes with 1GB of GDDR5 RAM.
You can grab the GX640 already at Amazon.com, and MSI says the budget gamer will becoming to Newegg later this month (which means in the next few days).

Samsung Core i5 NP-R580-JSB1US Laptop is Impressive

I recently searched, reviewed and compared the best laptops available today because I was looking to buy a new laptop. I was even thinking of getting a netbook but in the end, I decided to get a more powerful laptop. I got the Sony Viao VPCCW21FX which is pretty good and slick. But the Samsung NP-R580-JSB1US 15.6 inch Laptop has impressed me so much! I highly recommend this laptop.
Imagine having the processor Intel Core i5, 4Gig RAM, 500GB SATA Hard disk, 15.6 inch widescreen LED screen with 1366 x 768 resolution and it doesn’t stop there. Aside from the already impressive specs and powerful computing power, it sports an NVIDIA GeForce GT 310M graphics with 512MB GDDR3 video memory. This is great for gaming and for video editing.
But it doesn’t stop there. The specs are powerful for gaming and computing but for entertainment, it gives you Blue-Ray player. These things doesn’t come cheap but Samsung made sure that this can also be used for multimedia entertainment. And by the looks of it, it is.

The jackpot and final factor for this great and awesome machine is the price. It’s only $829.99. Judging from the specs, if you buy this from HP, Sony or Lenovo, this might cost you around $1,000 bucks.
Here’s the full specs and review for the Samsung NP-R580-JSB1US Laptop. It comes in both black or red.

I highly recommend this laptop and I think it is well worth the price Samsung is asking for. The only concern I see in this is that it only has a standard 6-cell battery so it’s roughly around 3 hours. Not bad.
Also, if you are brand conscious, Samsung is a new player in the laptop market so it can be awhile before they start gaining brand recognition in this market.
What do you think?

Asus Eee PC 1015PD product page appears

Asus Eee PC 1015PD product page appears

The Asus Eee PC 1015PD has finally received its product page on the Internet to confirm a report late last month that pointed towards the existence of such a model. This new 10" netbook will feature either a 1.66GHz Intel Atom N455 or 1.83GHz Intel Atom N475 processor, not to mention DDR3 memory that ranges from 1GB to 2GB, depending on your configuration. Apart from that, you can choose from a 160GB, 250GB or 320GB hard drive to keep the 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 3.0 connectivity options company. Depending on your choice of batteries, it should be able to last anytime from 4.5 to 13 hours. Other specifications are pretty much cookie cutter netbook fare, with a 0.3-megpaixel webcam, a 1024 x 600 pixel display, VGA output, a couple of USB 3.0 ports (nice to see Asus keep up with the times), an SDHC memory card slot and relevant mic and headphone jacks, with Windows 7 Starter Edition being the operating system of choice. There is still no word on pricing though.
