13 Misleading Myths About Google AdSense You Should Avoid

Hey guys! As i promised on my Twitter few days ago, today i’ll share about what i have learned from becoming Google AdSense publishers since i started this blog in 2007. I have been trying many tips and tricks to optimize my AdSense performance. Some works but most of them didn’t. But the most interesting thing i found is that people are now started to consider to abandon AdSense and some of them have already did. That’s just because there are so many misleading myths about Google AdSense which people don’t really understand especially new blogger. So, before you decide to do the same thing, you probably need to read this.
First of all, you need to be aware that just because your Google AdSense performance is poor doesn’t mean it doesn’t work for you and your blogs. Online advertising is not static, instead it keeps changing and evolved while sometimes also struggle depends on the economic Law of Demand. So, keep focus on your blog, write great posts and get more traffic. And the most important thing is, don’t worry to much or get distracted by the following Google AdSense myths, they are all wrong!

1. Google AdSense is Dead
This is probably the biggest mistake blogger ever think. So i suggest you not to be one of those who think so and stay away from this mislead thought. The fact is Google AdSense is still one of the best and easiest way to make money especially for new blogger who just started blogging with very low traffic and experience. Those people who think that AdSense is dead are probably just don’t understand about online advertising or want to make money in instant ways so they blame Google when they experienced poor AdSense performance.
2. AdSense Dilutes your brand equity
I read about this on one of famous blog recently and seemingly other bloggers wrote the same thing. However somehow i don’t agree with this opinion. This is the example they said about this. Let’s say your blog is about internet marketing and suddenly there’s an ads about Spam software shown on your blog for many times. With this situation people will think that your blog is somehow equal with Spamming software or something like that. Another example is if there’s an ads from your competitor shown on your blog. At some point this probably correct. But i don’t think all AdSense publishers care about this kind of blog branding stuffs as long as they can make money with that. And i don’t think Google also care about that.
3. Google takes more and left nothing to publishers
One of the reason blogger decided to abandon AdSense is the thought that Google takes more from advertisers and left nothing to publishers in terms of Cost Per Click (CPC). In some points this is probably wright. I’m not sure how’s the percentage but what i heard Google gets bigger portion than the publishers. However, let’s think fair here. Google has invested a lot to build their AdSense system and that’s the business model they have which has proven to make them as the biggest player in PPC advertising. So, don’t expect to change it. Instead, just focus on your side that is your blogs.
4. Time to find AdSense alternatives
If you search for the term “adsense alternatives” on the internet you will find huge number of articles about this. But my question is, do you really need AdSense alternatives when you can still make money with AdSense? I have tried so many other advertising networks both PPC and eCPM ads including Bidvertisers, AdBrite, Kontera, Infolinks, Smowtion, Chitika and many more but at the end i come to a conclusion that there’s none of them work better than AdSense at least for my blogs.
5. Google AdSense CTR low
Is the AdSense low Click Through Rate (CTR) makes you frustrating? If so, don’t worry as all people probably facing the same problem. But the good thing is, that’s not just happen for AdSense but also all advertising networks including those which people says as AdSense alternatives.  That’s what happening for online advertising in general. The fact is there’s no standard about the normal CTR of ads on a blog. But of course the higher CTR is the better. What i’m thinking is, clicking an ads is something that supposed to be done by people, not machine. So, if people don’t click the ads on your blog, it doesn’t mean that your blog or the AdSense are bad. Instead, it’s simply because the ads that are shown on your blog not attractive enough to make people click them.
6. Google AdSense CPC sucks
Based on my experience, sometimes the AdSense CPC is very low. However, at the other days the CPC really surprising me. So, that’s a normal situation since advertisers will not spend the same amount of budget for their ads campaign for the whole periods. It really depends on the situation like i told you about the economic Law of Demand. For example, advertisers will probably spend more budgets during the Black Friday than the normal days so they can compete with other advertiser in AdSense hence it will increase the AdSense CPC accordingly. So, stop to think just from your side as publisher. Instead, you also have to consider what’s happening on the Google AdSense side.
7. More Ad Units More Income
As you know AdSense allows you to put up to three units of ads from each types on one blog. The idea is to give more chances for your blog readers to click the ads as they browse through your blog. The fact is, that doesn’t always work like that. I have tried to put only one ad unit on my blog for some period but it worked more or less the same with the time i have three units of ads at the same blog. So it really case-by-case and you should find what works best for your blogs. Another thing is, you have to consider about the number of your blog traffic and how much time your readers spend on you blog. In that way you can set a proportional ratio of time your readers spend reading your blog compare to chances for them to click the ads.
8. AdSense is not a Math
I have read many articles and books about Making Money Online with Google AdSense and i found that most of them always started with a very wrong perspective about the AdSense it self as if it works like a Math. For example, they says if you get $1 from one click that means you will make $100 if you can get 100 cliks, so let’s increase the CTR. Another example is, if you make $10 when you have 1000 visitors that means you can make $100 when you have 10,000 visitors. Man i tell you, that’s completely wrong! AdSense doesn’t work like that. So, don’t be surprise if you get $1 for the first click but at the end of the day you just get $1.5 after 5 clicks.
9. Adjust Ads Position Increase CTR
One of the most popular AdSense optimization tips is to adjust the Ads position in order to increase the CTR. It probably works but i suggest you not to over-tweaking the Ad position. Instead of spending to much times and efforts of doint that, i strongly recommend you to follow the AdSense Heat Map for the ads positioning which i believe has been through a research by the AdSense team. And another important thing you need to do is to understand where your traffic comes from and where your readers spend their time the most on your blog. That’s where you supposed to put your AdSense units.
10. Adjust Ads Appearance Increase CTR
For so many times blogger ask about what’s the best performing AdSense colors. Some blogger probably said blue is the best but others probably said different colors. And i finally found that many famous blogs and websites decided to go back to the original and famous default AdSense colors that’s the “Open Air” color palettes. I’m sure they do that in purpose considering that other color schemes probably just not perform better. But once again, it really depends on your own experience with your blog. You may try some color combinations and find which one works best. But if you become frustrating of doing that, i suggest to to use the AdSense default color schemes.
11. AdSense filter Increase CPC
I’m sure you know there’s a feature in AdSense called “Competitive Ad Filter” where you can block some ads to be shown on your blog. I used to think that by doing that would increase the CPC and i’m sure many blogger think the same. The fact is, there’s no relation about filtering ads with the CPC it self. The right thing is, by doing this you probably can expect to increase the CTR by removing uninteresting ads or ads that are not related to your blog.
12. Blended design performs best
You must be familiar with this “blended design” term. It means that if your blog mostly using blue colors, your AdSense should also use the same color so they will be blended with your blog design. That’s what the AdSense team and most people recommended. But that doesn’t mean you can’t try different approach. I read many people got the best result when they use completely contrast colors with the blog appearance. But the most important thing you need to remember is, people click the ads not because of the colors or appearance. Instead, they click the ads just because they find something interesting on the ads either the ads design for the image ads, or the ads campaign for the text ads.
13. AdSense works best on targeted niche blogs
The last thing that i could thing about this topic is this. People always thing that the most targeted their blog niche, the better AdSense will perform. But i would say for so many times blogger have been misslead by this thought as they don’t really understand what “targeted niche” are really about. Let’s say that your blog is about technology, more specific niche would be something like gadgets, and more specific niche would probably about mobile phones, and again probably specificaly about iPhone. In this point you managed to have the most targeted niche for your blog. But at the end you will see the ads shown on your blog would be the same most of the time with almost all similar blogs out there even with more general niches. Do you think people will click these kind of ads? The most likely will happen is they will ignore those ads since they have seen the same ads everywhere they go on the internet. So, the idea of targeted niche is to make the ads shown on your blog are really related to the topics of your blog. But it doesn’t mean by having that will significantly increase the AdSense performance.
Well, this has became a very long post after all. I hope you enjoy this post and get the point i want to share with you. And most importantly is you can get benefits from reading this long post. As a conclusion,  if you have been experiencing poor performance with AdSense, please just keep it for your own secret and don’t mislead other people just because of your bad experience.
